Anyone working with children in care, care leavers or those with a social worker

About the session

The language we use about children in care, whether written or verbal, has the potential to shape the opportunities they may or may not receive, their future prospects and their self-confidence. This session will explore how we can use language as a tool to open doors for children and leave a positive lasting legacy in life story work, case note records, at meetings we attend on behalf of children or even in our daily interactions. It will also explore the rights children and young people have with regards to accessing their records in the future, and prepare them accordingly.

This training is delivered by a care-experienced social worker who has read their own care records, and has been at both ends of the spectrum, having written case notes/life story books themselves from behind a computer screen, and having received their own years later.

Learning outcomes

  • To explore how language and stigma in the system can hold children back, and how to challenge unconscious bias in other professionals. This includes reframing the way in which we ourselves speak of, and write about children in care.
  • To understand the impact that case notes and life story work can have not only on children's prospects, but on the opportunities they may receive as a result.
  • To discuss how to support a child/young person who is in the process of Subject Access Requests (retrieving their own records).
  • To provide an opportunity for peer-reflection on the importance of child-centred language, care-leaver rights and power dynamics which exist in the care system.young people to thrive and reach their full potential.
