About the session

Children and young people are growing up in a world that looks very different from the one our brains evolved for. Rising anxiety, low mood, sleep disruption and emotional overwhelm are no longer edge cases – they are becoming the norm.

Drawing on Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation and decades of developmental and trauma-informed practice, this session explores what has changed, why it matters, and what we can do about it – together.

Learning outcomes

  • How human beings are wired for safety, belonging and meaning
  • The impact of digital environments on children’s brains, relationships and development
  • The difference between flow states (connection, curiosity, resilience) and fear states (fight, flight or freeze)
  • The four key harms linked to phone-based childhoods:
    social deprivation, sleep deprivation, attention fragmentation and addiction
  • How stress becomes harmful when it overwhelms the nervous system
  • Why relationships, co-regulation and community matter more than ever
