About the session

 An exploration of the complex intersection between neurodivergence and the inevitable trauma experienced by all children impacted by the care system. Learn more about how Neurodivergence may present and how best to identify and support the needs that may arise as a result. Drawing on the speaker's unusual combination of Neurodivergence and professional experience as a Virtual School head and longstanding educator, we will explore a range of perspectives and focus on how best to ensure none of our children's needs are missed.

Learning outcomes

  • To understand the differences between the medical models of disability and the Social model the "Neurodiversity paradigm"

  • To understand some of the similarities and intersections of trauma and ND on children and young people in care

  • To explore some of the challenges around identifying ND in the care experienced population

  • To develop a range of strategies for exploring and identifying possible ND in children in care

    Including and supporting children in care where ND maybe/is confirmed and support their needs within existing systems
Presenter

Sarah Bailey

Sarah Bailey, a former Virtual School Headteacher, Primary Headteacher and Secondary SENCO and Inclusion leader has 20+ years experience in working closely with care experienced children and their supporting professionals across the full range of contexts. Her passion is for developing child-centred, trauma-informed, neuro-affirming work that truly meets the needs of each unique child.

Late diagnosed (Autistic and ADHD) earlier this year Sarah has spent the last 6 months as Co-Director of NeuroDIVE: a consultancy informed by combined professional and personal experience, bringing new perspectives to training in Education, Social Care and Fostering sectors. 

Sarah studied Psychology to postgrad level and is trained to Level 2 in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy. She has an almost life-long fascination (or hyper-focus) with the idea that all behaviour is communication and truly believes that effective, relational practice lead to true inclusion for all.
