This webinar explores the criminological, zemiological, and psychosocial dimensions of how the UK prison system compounds pre-existing institutional harm for care-experienced children and young people. Drawing on a critical synthesis of victimology, masculinity theory, zemiology, and ecological systems theory, the session interrogates the structural processes that underpin the criminalisation and continued victimisation of looked-after children.

About the session

This webinar explores the criminological, zemiological, and psychosocial dimensions of how the UK prison system compounds pre-existing institutional harm for care-experienced children and young people. Drawing on a critical synthesis of victimology, masculinity theory, zemiology, and ecological systems theory, the session interrogates the structural processes that underpin the criminalisation and continued victimisation of looked-after children.

Learning outcomes

  • Critically examine the relationship between state care and criminalisation, including how structural failures within the care system contribute to the over-representation of care-experienced individuals in the criminal justice system.
  • Analyse the concept of institutional harm through zemiological and victimological frameworks, with particular focus on how incarceration reproduces and exacerbates existing trauma and marginalisation among care-experienced populations.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of current criminal justice responses to care-experienced children and young people, considering alternative approaches grounded in trauma-informed, rights-based, and rehabilitative models of practice.
